In the heart of an area of outstanding natural beauty, nestles an old property steeped in history. Built as a house, then opened as a hotel by the marquis of Downshire to serve the thriving harbour and local railway station, this wonderful old building now houses one of only two Irish showrooms of the prestigious Clearview Stoves, and the only one in the North of Ireland.
It is reported that the famous designer and engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, stayed at the property in December 1846, during the protection and subsequent salvage mission of the SS Great Britain steam ship. This first Iron Ship was stranded close to the rocks of the Cow andCalf just outside the inner bay of Dundrum, on 22nd September 1846.
Her well respected captain, James Hosken, made an error in the speedat which she was traveling from Liverpool, on a trans-Atlantic crossing. He missed the lighthouse at the Calf of Man in bad weather and onseeing the St Johns Lighthouse, not yet shown on his charts, he took aheading North and beached the ship until 27th August 1847, almost ayear later, when the protection proved important as she refloated.
